Annie Jump Cannon

At Parke Green Galleries we love promoting the history of our wonderful capital, Dover. One of our favorite daughters is Annie Jump Cannon, the astronomer who was a Dover resident for over 30 years. She became internationally famous for her work at Harvard and was our star gazer. This is the third year we have celebrated her birthday. This page highlights the major events for Annie’s celebration. We are partnering with several local organizations this year to bring an expanded celebration. We are delighted to bring such a talented writer to our area to speak about Annie and her peers amazing accomplishments in the field of astronomy.

Selected quotes from Annie’s Diaries included in The Glass Universe.

“In the house where I was born, there stood on the white marble mantel, a candelabra representing a gilded tree…I remember no other plaything than these prisms which were easily detachable.  To hold one in my hands, to catch a sunbeam…was a delight to my youthful eyes.  Stars and prisms!  How prophetic was this baby amusement of the profession which was destined to fi ll my life.” —- Annie Jump Cannon quote

“Twelve weeks ago tonight, she {her mother} was downstairs …worried about my taking a nap on my couch without covering…She said she knew I was going to be sick for I looked so, and here I am after twelve weeks of agony,,,,,here I am well, my constitution will carry me through many years, yet may I be led into a useful, busy life. I am not afraid of work. I long for it. What can it be?’ —- Annie Jump Cannon quote.

tt was almost as if the distant stars had really acquired speech, and were able to tell of their constitution and physical condition. — Annie Jump Cannon quo
